“Whopper Sacrifice”: More than 45000 Friends have been sacrificed for a Burger

Burger King has been known to be ahead of the game in regards to funny and unique marketing campaigns but this one is actually dead-on hilarious.

Burger King developed a Facebook application called “Whopper Sacrifice”, Taking its name from the fast food company’s well-known burger, gives any Facebook user the opportunity to get a coupon for a free Whopper, in exchange for “sacrificing” 10 friends, or removing them entirely from your friend list.

But beware. While Facebook lets you anonymously eliminate your “friends,” the Burger King application notifies them when you “sacrifice” them in your quest for free fast food. It will even display on your feed for all to see that you sacrificed your friendship with so-and-so for a free Whopper. And as they say on the Whopper Sacrifice Web site, it’s time to put those fair-weather Web friendships to the test.

According to the Whopper Sacrifice web site, more than 45092 (At Friday 09-01-2009: 11.30am local time) friends have been sacrificed — all for a (roughly) $2 Whopper.

The news of Burger King’s funky campaign comes just as Facebook announced that it has hit a milestone of 150 million users. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted in his blog yesterday that while the social networking site has 150 million users, nearly half of them use the network on a daily basis.
