Ever Thought that What is the True Purpose of Facebook?

A few days ago friend invited me to join facebook, I joined it but the problem is that now that friend only communicates via facebook, we used to text and email, and phone each other.

So my question is What is the purpose of Facebook and similar web sites? All of these websites called themselves Social Networking sites. And people join them to become more socials in their life. But it doesn’t seems to me like that.

I Asked the same question on answers.yahoo.com. Here is the answer i got from different people. I am coping their replies as they are. no editing at all….

1 – A guy reply with this answer and his answer rated as the best answer. He said, “Facebook and myspace are social networking sites meant to bring people together who do not know each other personally but have same interests or affiliations (i.e. went to same high school/college). Unfortunately sometimes these sites take the place of actual physical contact with folks you do know in person. this is one of the fall backs of the internet in general.”

2 – Another Guy Said, “It’s an experiment in social control. Since everybody (almost) has access to the internet, those of us who have been foolish enough to lay bare our souls in such a forum are open to the abuses which go with such an act. Employers are slowly cottoning on to this phenomenon, and may hire/fire dependent upon stuff they read.”

3 – One girl posted her reply in favor of Facebook said, “It is like a social life on the web. i like it. i have over 60 friends. most of whom i went to high school with and have not spoken to since then. it is great way to keep in touch.”

4 – A Guy pointed on very important aspect of these sites. he said, “Its not written in stone But I belive most People use it as a dating site a place where they hope to meet with others offline for a little fun and games”

5 – Here comes the funny answer i was expecting, “So if your parents tell you to clean your room or won’t buy you a new iPod, you can complain about it to the entire world.”

6 – A dude responded, “It is supposed to be a way to communicate and share things with your friends and others, but it also a way of getting yourself a lot of problems if you put too much personal information on it. It is a good idea gone bad.”

7 – And finally the true face of facebook told by a girl. she said, “Facebook was created mainly for those who have graduated high school and are trying to keep in touch with their friends as they are all moving off to different colleges. But now its just used in the same way myspace, xanga, etc. are used.”

50,000 Members Signed Petition Against Facebook Beacon Advertising

Facebook has made significant changes to its recently launched Beacon advertising platform after 50,000 Facebook members signed a MoveOn.org petition over a 10-day period, asking the site to respect user privacy.

Beacon sends messages to members friends about what they are purchasing online. If the member booked a trip to Japan on Travelocity.com, for example, friends on Facebook would know it. If the member purchased a ticket to “American Gangster,” that would also be known among friends.

Facebook backpedaled. The social-networking site now says it won’t send messages about members’ Internet activities without getting approval each and every time. Members will opt in to the program.

When Facebook launched the program on November 6, it wasn’t positioned as a Big Brother scenario. The new advertising solution was positioned as an option to share actions on other sites with friends on Facebook.

“Just as Facebook shares your on-site interactions with your friends through News Feed, we now give you an option to let News Feed share your off-site actions with your friends as well,” explained Leah Pearlman, the product manager for Facebook ads, in the company blog.

MoveOn.org launched its petition on November 20, saying Beacon was an invasion of privacy. The petition reads, “Site like Facebook must respect my privacy. They should not tell my friends what I buy on.

People use Facebook Status could be suffering from Insecurity

According to a new study, If you are the one who update their status message on social networking sites like Facebook, regularly, then people can easily know what kind of a person are you.

The study has claimed that the short statement, which can be seen by hundreds of online friends, reveals much more about you than you think.

Psychologist and author Dr Michael Carr-Gregg said that people who use it could be suffering from insecurity. “You’re sending a message out to everybody that rather than just quietly getting on with what you’re doing you need external recognition,”

Carr-Gregg claimed that people who post updates about feeling depressed were actually seeking attention, and he cautioned that such behavior could ultimately prove to be dangerous.

“This is a digital SOS. They can be very, very upsetting when you send out something and you get absolutely nothing back. You could be forgiven for thinking no one cares, but not everybody is online or checking their phone all the time,” he said.

Also, he revealed that updates about children could turn out to be quite boring for others.

“Parental pride is understandable, we’re allowed to be proud about our children milestones but the tragedy is that nobody else gives a stuff,” he said.

Facebook is spamming its own Users with Email

Facebook has taken the unusual step of sending its users email asking them to click on a link so they can restore site configuration settings that were recently lost.

The Email is something like that:
“Unfortunately, the settings that control which email notifications get sent to you were lost,” the email says. “We’re sorry for the inconvenience. To reset your email notification settings, go to http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?notifications.”

The wording sounds like so many phishing emails we’ve all received over the years. Except it’s not, and that’s unfortunate because it threatens to desensitize newbies to the ever-present dangers of phishing attacks.

The move, because it flies in the face of everything security experts advise against, took some Facebook users by surprise. “I’m amazed to see a large organization like that sending something that looks so obviously evil,” wrote Reg reader Kevin Lentin, who first brought our attention to the emails. “It would have been better to send an email saying ‘please go to our website and login.’”

That’s because Facebook is one bigger targets of phishers. With all the spammers eager to trick users into clicking on dodgy links, you’d think Facebook’s security team would bend over backwards to educate their users to steer clear of them in emails, no matter where they appear to come from.
