More than 1.7 million Facebook users have joined a protest against another redesign of the popular social networking site, in one of the biggest consumer revolts seen in the online world. The group is pleading with the social network to “make small changes and make the transition easier to deal with.”

Facebook has redesigned its layout (second time in a year), in order to better compete with upcoming popular real-time microblogging service Twitter. But with the transition to the new interface complete, Facebook has fallen under heavy criticism this weekend for not listening to the wishes of its users, who vehemently protested against the change to the new layout. Also making its pages more advertiser friendly.
Opponents of the new design say it clutters their home page with updates from people they don’t care about, while also limiting the number of features available to users.

Facebook has acknowledged the criticism, but so far has declined to take any action.

“The new Facebook home page is one step in the continued evolution of the site, designed to give people more ways to share and filter all types of content, such as status updates, photos, videos, notes and more,” the company said in a statement.

“We are listening carefully to what people are saying about the new home page through a variety of channels and are committed to using it to inform how we build and improve the site for everyone.”
I got hundreds of email on this weekend about their pictures just disappeared from famous social networking site Facebook. When i refered to Facebook blog i got the shock of my life that Facebook lost more than 1 billion photograph, which are 10% – 15% of total photographs hosted on facebook due to hard drive failure.

According to Facebook several drives failed at once during a routine upgrade Friday night.

“You may have noticed in the past day that some photos aren’t appearing or are displaying a ‘question mark’ graphic when you go to view them. We’re trying to fully understand what happened, since simultaneous hardware failures like this are rare” Evan Priestley, an engineer at Facebook Inc.

Facebook still is not quite sure how the outage happened.

Priestley also wrote, “During an otherwise routine software upgrade on Friday night, we ran into some problems with our photo storage and a few of the hard drives where we store photos apparently failed all at once. We are trying to fully understand what happened, since simultaneous hardware failures like this are rare.”

Though facebook guys said that they have recovered one-third photographs, however, i dont think they will able to put things back to normal in a week time.

For some people who use facebook for keeping their business contact this lost is nightmare. Although Facebook is no stranger to uptime issues, with minor but noticeable outages hitting the social network as recently as two months ago. However, this is different and more serious in sense of effecting user hosted data.

So advice for everyone who use facebook. please always keep backup of your data to your hard drive or upload stuff on some other websites.

An Oxford University neuroscientist, Susan Greenfield says that social networking websites like Facebook are causing alarming changes in the brains of young users. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter are said to shorten attention spans, make young people more self-centered, and encourage instant gratification.

“We know how small babies need constant reassurance that they exist”, she told the UK’s Daily Mail.

“My fear is that these technologies are infantilising the brain into the state of small children who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment.”

Lady Greenfield, head of Royal Institute, has concerns that internet-obsessed children were losing the ability to concentrate and communicate away from the screen. Regular web users displayed a need for constant reassurance typical of small babies.

While speaking to House of Lords she also warned that conversations in chat rooms, message boards and on networking websites were replacing the face-to-face interactions that are key to developing a child’s sociability.

“I often wonder whether real conversation in real time may eventually give way to these sanitized and easier screen dialogues, in much the same way as killing, skinning and butchering an animal to eat has been replaced by the convenience of packages of meat on the supermarket shelf,” she said.

“It is hard to see how living this way on a daily basis will not result in brains, or rather minds, different from those of previous generations.”

Toxic Childhood author Sue Palmer told the Daily Mail, “We are seeing children’s brain development damaged because they don’t engage in the activity they have engaged in for millennia. “I’m not against technology and computers. But before they start social networking, they need to learn to make real relationships with people.”

Teenagers spend an average of 31 hours a week online, research suggests. Social networking sites like Facebook that allow young people to keep in touch with their friends, publish photos and post updates on what they are doing are particularly popular.

Scientists are divided about the mental consequences of the digital revolution; a study published last year showed that internet use could improve brain function and speed up decision-making but at the expense of empathy and the ability to think in abstract terms.
After Spreading propaganda on YouTube, blogs and other social media websites with great success Islamic extremists, so called jihadists, are planning to put together their efforts on Social Networking sites, especially Facebook.

“We can use Facebook to fight the media,” notes a recent posting on the extremist al-Faloja forum, translated by Jihadica.com. “We can post media on Facebook that shows the Crusader losses.”

“We have already had great success in raiding YouTube,” the poster adds. “American politicians have used Facebook to get votes, like the house slave Obama.”

Groups like Al-Qaida were pioneering users of the internet — to train, share ideas and organize. But some observers, like George Washington University professor Marc Lynch, see a reluctance to embrace Web 2.0 tools like Facebook. “One of the biggest problems for a virtual network today is that it needs to build connections between its members while protecting itself from its enemies. He raised a very important question, “That’s a filtering problem: How do you get your people in, and keep intelligence agents out?”.

But as Jihadica.com author and West Point Combating Terrorism Center fellow William McCants notes, the proposed Facebook invasion “is not an attempt to replicate [existing] social networks.” Instead, “the members of the campaign want to exploit existing networks of people who are hostile to them and presumably they will adopt new identities once they have posted their material.”

The al-Faloja poster suggests seven “brigades” work together within Facebook. One will distribute videos and writing of so-called “martyrs.” Another will spread military training material. Most of them will work in Arabic, presumably. But one of the units will focus just on spread English-language propaganda through Facebook.
According to a new study, If you are the one who update their status message on social networking sites like Facebook, regularly, then people can easily know what kind of a person are you.

The study has claimed that the short statement, which can be seen by hundreds of online friends, reveals much more about you than you think.

Psychologist and author Dr Michael Carr-Gregg said that people who use it could be suffering from insecurity. “You’re sending a message out to everybody that rather than just quietly getting on with what you’re doing you need external recognition,”

Carr-Gregg claimed that people who post updates about feeling depressed were actually seeking attention, and he cautioned that such behavior could ultimately prove to be dangerous.

“This is a digital SOS. They can be very, very upsetting when you send out something and you get absolutely nothing back. You could be forgiven for thinking no one cares, but not everybody is online or checking their phone all the time,” he said.

Also, he revealed that updates about children could turn out to be quite boring for others.

“Parental pride is understandable, we’re allowed to be proud about our children milestones but the tragedy is that nobody else gives a stuff,” he said.

I have so many friends on facebook and everyone of them always ask me why i don’t join facebook community. So finally i joined facebook last month but after spending sometime on facebook i realized that facebook completely sucks and there are more useful ways to spend my time (and more fun ways to waste it).

Anyway here are 10 reasons facebook sucks. I think most of you guys will agree with me.
1. Facebook doesn’t even know who the hell they are, yet people are willing to put their professional identity even partly in their hands. Guess what. Their first model sucked. They’re toying with something new. Do you really want to invest a lot of time and effort into networking through a company who couldn’t even remain faithful to their own market? I sure as hell don’t.

2. It’s incredibly juvenile compared to other networks, yet I constantly see people using it for business reasons. Use unprofessional services, and that’s exactly how it makes you look. If you think it’s professional to “poke” your colleagues online, maybe you still belong chasing 10 year old boys around the schoolyard.

3. Facebook is a fad. Yes, a FAD!!! You couldn’t give a single legitimate argument to prove otherwise (and don’t try to feed me that crap line about social networking being around long enough to no longer be a fad… Facebook, a single company, doesn’t equate to “social networking”). People who waste their time chasing fads (especially in marketing) always get burned, wasting more time than they can justify in the long run.

4. Frankly, there are better ways to reach your target audience (unless you’re primarily targeting students – despite their changes, that’s still the primary userbase. If you’re targeting them, Facebook may be an alright tool for you. If you’re not, forget it.). If you’re not putting in the effort to find the best ways to reach your target audience, you’re not doing your job. In most cases, Facebook won’t even come close.

5. PR professionals should know hype when they see it. Enough said on that front.

6. Most people I know who are on Facebook are on a variety of other social networks as well. Newsflash: most have no real added benefit. If you’re using Facebook as just one of several social networking sites, you have way too much time on your hands that would probably be better spent elsewhere.

7. The company has a history of not being terribly considerate of their users’ privacy. They may have privacy options available now, but do you really trust a company like that when it comes to your business? If you do, that’s great. Dense perhaps, but great.

8. The fact that they try to act like their own little virtual world is just annoying. Any site that forces you to register to really get a feel for it is just pathetic. It’s a simple marketing tactic on their end to rev up their member numbers (and supposed worth?) whether people actually use the site or not.

9. Speaking of their “value,” I’m sick of hearing about it. All the talk about whether or not they’d be sold and for how much is what started all of Facebook buzz in the first place (despite the fact that most of the newer die hard fans don’t even realize where the sudden mass interest came from).

10. Frankly, Facebook is so “been there done that.” They’re dated. They’re not “cool” anymore. The early adopters have come, gone, and moved onto better (and more useful) things, and what you have now is this overwhelming group of stale business-minded folks who still buy into the hype. Why? Because most people are too lazy to actually research a marketing / PR tactic before jumping on the bandwagon when it’s all everyone’s talking about. That’s the nature of being a fad. The only good thing about Facebook is the fact that fads die.
