More than 1.7 million Facebook users have joined a protest against another redesign of the popular social networking site, in one of the biggest consumer revolts seen in the online world. The group is pleading with the social network to “make small changes and make the transition easier to deal with.”

Facebook has redesigned its layout (second time in a year), in order to better compete with upcoming popular real-time microblogging service Twitter. But with the transition to the new interface complete, Facebook has fallen under heavy criticism this weekend for not listening to the wishes of its users, who vehemently protested against the change to the new layout. Also making its pages more advertiser friendly.
Opponents of the new design say it clutters their home page with updates from people they don’t care about, while also limiting the number of features available to users.

Facebook has acknowledged the criticism, but so far has declined to take any action.

“The new Facebook home page is one step in the continued evolution of the site, designed to give people more ways to share and filter all types of content, such as status updates, photos, videos, notes and more,” the company said in a statement.

“We are listening carefully to what people are saying about the new home page through a variety of channels and are committed to using it to inform how we build and improve the site for everyone.”

Once again Facebook has redesigned its look and so many users are already started make complains. Some members have even formed protest groups to pressure Facebook to reconsider the move. Also so many angry status messages and even a protest day has been planned. One group called “One million against the new Facebook look,” had 254,512 members at this afternoon.
The last time Facebook went through a redesign, a few months back, thousands of people took an instant dislike to it. This time, however, I wonder whether the people at Facebook will be able to get off so lightly. I like to think that I know a fair amount about user experience after my years of web and application design, and I feel that they may have lost the plot a little bit on this one.

The big difference between the last change and this one is that last time round it was more of a re-arrangement of existing features than a more substantial change of direction. Whereas the Facebook-using public already knew what all the features were, and were quickly able to relocate those that they used, this latest update has left many, including myself, scratching our heads in confusion.

Christine Ledo, a veterinary technician in Oakland, said she’s upset that Facebook changed how it handles what she called “passive information.” Previously, she could see in her feed when a friend connected with someone else or joined a group. It tipped her off to people she might also want to friend or groups she might want to join. Now, she complains, the information appears in a different place or not at all.

Ledo said she’s giving Facebook a month to fix the problem. Every day the company doesn’t, she said, she sends it a message. If Facebook doesn’t respond after a month, Ledo said, “I am deleting my account.”
The Facebook Blackout of 2008 has begun. More than 1.3 million of Facebook’s 120 million active users pledged to boycott the site for twenty-four (24) hours beginning at 12:00 PM Eastern Time today. The boycott, organized by disgruntled user Boris Kelevra (Paris, France), aims to force Facebook into reverting to its old design through the loss of advertising revenues otherwise generated by boycott participants. In addition to the 1.3 million known participants, nearly 1.5 million users “may” participate in the boycott.

“Friends account deleted, Limited in sending message or poking, stupid new layout ! Administrators don’t care about what we think ! But what will happen if we all decide to stay off of facebook for 1 day !”

On July 21, Facebook rolled out a redesign of the site, based on feedback from 100,000 users (The Facebook Blog). The redesign was aimed at making it easier for users to access the content they want most while improving site speed. Among the most visible changes was the categorical division of a user’s Profile page into tabbed pages, as opposed to having every type of media an individual uses on the site awkwardly laid out on one page.

The new design was immediately hit by a backlash of users who were surprised by the extent of the changes. Two of the redesign protest groups on Facebook currently have nearly 4.5 million members collectively. Among other complaints are that the privacy settings are not clear or strict enough, so that a user’s information may be shared with unknown parties without the user’s knowledge.

It is unclear at this time whether Facebook will make any changes due to the boycott. However, an exchange on Yahoo! Answers suggests that the protest is having an impact.

A second protest event on Facebook is scheduled for January 9 through January 12, 2009.
