I got hundreds of email on this weekend about their pictures just disappeared from famous social networking site Facebook. When i refered to Facebook blog i got the shock of my life that Facebook lost more than 1 billion photograph, which are 10% – 15% of total photographs hosted on facebook due to hard drive failure.

According to Facebook several drives failed at once during a routine upgrade Friday night.

“You may have noticed in the past day that some photos aren’t appearing or are displaying a ‘question mark’ graphic when you go to view them. We’re trying to fully understand what happened, since simultaneous hardware failures like this are rare” Evan Priestley, an engineer at Facebook Inc.


Facebook still is not quite sure how the outage happened.

Priestley also wrote, “During an otherwise routine software upgrade on Friday night, we ran into some problems with our photo storage and a few of the hard drives where we store photos apparently failed all at once. We are trying to fully understand what happened, since simultaneous hardware failures like this are rare.”

Though facebook guys said that they have recovered one-third photographs, however, i dont think they will able to put things back to normal in a week time.

For some people who use facebook for keeping their business contact this lost is nightmare. Although Facebook is no stranger to uptime issues, with minor but noticeable outages hitting the social network as recently as two months ago. However, this is different and more serious in sense of effecting user hosted data.

So advice for everyone who use facebook. please always keep backup of your data to your hard drive or upload stuff on some other websites.

Here’s how it works: When you post pics, only people who are your friends can see them. However, if I am friends with “Jane” and Jane comments on “Sam’s” picture, this comment (and Sam’s picture) get posted for ME to see. And I’ve never met Sam in my life. Not only that, but I can click on the picture and see the whole album of all Sam’s pictures. Just the one album though. So, poor Sam is getting his pictures looked at by every single person who is Jane’s friends. And, the same goes for anyone else who comments on his picture.

Imagine that, all your friends friends can look through your entire album every time that friend comments on a picture. So until Facebook closes this privacy loophole you might want to protect your friends privacy, by not commenting on pictures. Imagine what parents, coworkers, and others think when they see pictures of you that you don’t want them to see!
