Thousands of Brits are addicted to social networking sites, spending hours exchanging messages or uploading pictures when they could be out with their pals down the pub.
Experts at Biologist, the journal of the British Institute Of Biology, have even warned that the loss of face-to-face interaction can increase the risk of cancer, dementia, heart disease, diabetes, flu and the common cold.
Due to the social networking sites popularity The Sun newspaper journalist Nick Francis decided to spend a whole day sitting infront of computer doing nothing but to use different social networking sites.
Nick wrote on his blog on The Sun newspaper, “Armed with 12 coffees and six Red Bulls, I spent 24 hours straight in the world of Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and Twitter to see what it is really like to be truly addicted to social networking or notworking. ”
He started using social networking sites about 9:00am till next day 9:00am.
The last message he posted on facebook at 9:00am was “Twenty-four hours on. One thing I do know is that it has been a completely wasted day. I’ve learned nothing, done nothing and had no meaningful conversation. ”
Nick said, “But I can see how addictive it is. Now it’s over I get similar withdrawal symptoms to what it must be like giving up a drug. I want to click on again. I can easily see how people waste their lives. Being a member of all of these sites I relished the chance to spend the day on my laptop but the experience has left me feeling drained and unhealthy. I don’t think I want to see Facebook ever again.”
