1) There’s no way of taking yourself off of it.
Yes, I realize you can close your Facebook account or not do anything else, ever, but that would interrupt your normal use of Facebook SO much–to avoid activity on the feed, you would have to avoid friending people, joining groups, changing your profile or picture, uploading photos, tagging people, writing on the walls–basically every interesting thing to do with Facebook except displaying an already-made profile. With all the other Facebook features, you have control over the accessibility of your information–untagging photos, making your profile (or subsections) private, etc. So why not this?

A few days ago friend invited me to join facebook, I joined it but the problem is that now that friend only communicates via facebook, we used to text and email, and phone each other.
So my question is What is the purpose of Facebook and similar web sites? All of these websites called themselves Social Networking sites. And people join them to become more socials in their life. But it doesn’t seems to me like that.

Burger King developed a Facebook application called “Whopper Sacrifice”, Taking its name from the fast food company’s well-known burger, gives any Facebook user the opportunity to get a coupon for a free Whopper, in exchange for “sacrificing” 10 friends, or removing them entirely from your friend list.

Facebook has made significant changes to its recently launched Beacon advertising platform after 50,000 Facebook members signed a MoveOn.org petition over a 10-day period, asking the site to respect user privacy.
Beacon sends messages to members friends about what they are purchasing online. If the member booked a trip to Japan on Travelocity.com, for example, friends on Facebook would know it. If the member purchased a ticket to “American Gangster,” that would also be known among friends.
